The Location – El Cotillo and it’s surroundings
Fuerteventura
The island is famous for its stunning white sand beaches and very popular with water sport enthusiasts. El Cotillo just happens to have 2 of the best beach areas. To the south of the village we have the amazing stretch of the Playa del Castillo (Cotillo’s main beach) which is a surfers paradise, and to the north you have a whole series of sheltered lagoons with powder white sand and clear turquoise water protected from the waves by lava stone reefs. Here you can also find our famous natural wind breakers built by beach lovers using the lava rocks which offer protection on windy days and privacy for getting that all over tan if you are feeling a bit shy! The island has traditionally been a popular destination for naturists and still is.
How to get there?
Direct flights available from most major European airports. Flight times are between 3.5 – 5 hours. Currently charter companies Thomson and Thomas Cook provide direct flights to Fuerteventura from the UK, also Budget airlines Ryan Air, Easyjet and Monarch fly direct and AerLingus has resumed flights from Ireland.
Cheap car hire is available from the airport and bookable online from as little as 140 euros per week. We can arrange transfers from the airport from 40 euros each way which includes a mini tour of Cotillo for first time visitors.
A car is not essential as all of El Cotillo is accessible on foot. There is a reliable hourly bus service 7 days a week from the village to Correlejo which passes through the nearby villages of Lajares, Villaverde and La Oliva. There are Ferry terminals at Correlejo and Puerto del Rosario.
The climate
The climate is subtropical (temperatures usually range from 18-28C) and has very little rainfall. Its closest neighbour is the coast of West Africa. The sun shines approximately 8 hours a day almost every day of the year and so provides an ideal holiday destination at any time of the year.
The village and it’s surroundings
El Cotillo is set in the North West of the island of Fuerteventura. Once a sleepy fishing village, it is now moving into the 21st century and with it a certain amount of new developments. However once you are in your apartment or on your own private terrace the only view is of the ocean and mountains.
The village has 1 major and 2 smaller super markets, 2 banks and a parafarmacia. There are various other smaller stores and services in the village including a phone and internet shop. Many bars and restaurants now also have WiFi service. Restaurants are plentiful and most have excellent views over the beach or harbours.
The village maintains its Canarian feel and is an ideal location for a truly relaxing holiday. Surfing, body boarding, fishing, snorkelling, cycling and walking are all very popular in this area and equipment can be bought or hired locally. We now have a small horse riding stable on the edge of the next village of El Roque.
If you really have to leave El Cotillo you can find a water park, a zoo, museums, golfing and much more within easy access.
